The rapid aging of the population necessitates improved readability of signage in urban public spaces, contributing to the goal of healthy aging for all. Guided by universal design principles and the visual characteristics associated with cataracts, this study conducted on-site investigations of metro transfer station signage in Chengdu and Chongqing. The Munsell color system was employed to measure the luminance contrast between graphic elements and background colors. Using a luminance difference threshold of ΔL ≥ 6 as the criterion for readability, the compliance rate in Chongqing reached 46%, significantly higher than Chengdu’s 5%. Common color combinations—black, white, and gray—were found to offer weak contrast, resulting in low legibility. These findings provide a quantitative foundation for developing urban public space color guidelines and underscore the importance of incorporating the visual needs of elderly individuals with cataracts into the design of wayfinding signage.
